A new cannabis store being proposed in the Airport Rd and Sandalwood area in the city’s north-east has attracted the attention of residents and the local councillors. City council voted in January 2019 in favour of allowing cannabis stores in an 8 to 3 vote. Regional Councillor Gurpreet Dhillon, City Councillor Harkirat Singh and City Councillor Charmaine Williams voted against the decision.

Councillor Gurpreet Dhillon opposes the opening of a new shop in Wards 9 & 10 at 65 Braydon Boulevard, saying that “we must protect our neighbourhoods and children from drugs.” The store’s application is being reviewed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Residents can submit their concerns and feedback for the AGCO to review. Dhillon has outlined the steps necessary to do so in his statement below.

Councillor Singh was also asked about the application at the city’s weekly COVID-19 media briefing and indicated that while he voted against allowing cannabis stores anywhere in Brampton, the decision to allow the proposed shop is now the responsibility of the provincial government.
