Brampton’s New Hockey Initiative Will Save Lives

Mayor Patrick Brown announced a new charity event to support healthcare in the City of Brampton this morning (July 15, 2019). A hockey fan himself, the mayor was proud to announce the launch of Hockey Night in Brampton; an NHL-style hockey game to support the Cardiology Program at Brampton Civic Hospital, through the William Osler Health System Foundation. Previous efforts in Barrie raised over $2 million in 10 years.

Joined by Nicole McCahon, Vice President of Philanthropy at the William Osler Health System Foundation, and Glenn McIntyre, a member of the Brampton Hockey Staff, the mayor stated that the game will take place on August 22, 2019 at the CAA Centre in Brampton. He further revealed that the game will include a star-studded lineup featuring current NHL All-Stars as well as Hall of Fame Alumni with ties to the city. This year’s lineup will showcase locally-grown and locally-trained talent.

NHL All-Star Sean Monahan, 2019 Norris Trophy winner Mark Girodano, The Ritchie Brothers, as well as Brampton-born goaltender Scott Wedgewood will be in attendance. Even legendary coach Mike Keenan has agreed to coach players for the event!

While Hockey Night in Brampton is an incredible opportunity to watch local talent on the ice, the event’s purpose is to support the healthcare sector. Nicole McCahon explained during this morning’s announcement that Brampton has one of the busiest healthcare systems in the Greater Toronto Area, with the highest rates of patients surviving cardiac arrest. 100% of the cutting-edge equipment in Brampton hospitals is funded by the community, which makes events like Hockey Night in Brampton crucial to the life-saving work that happens within them.

Having launched a similar event in Barrie while serving as an MP, Mayor Brown hopes to unite the citizens of Brampton through this affordable family event. He says, “Hockey Night in Brampton will include a sold-out crowd of over 4000 fans, a star-studded lineup, a fun atmosphere and will raise money for a great cause! I cannot wait to see you all at Hockey Night in Brampton!”
