Peel Parents Hosting a Virtual Town Hall on Anti-Black Racism

In light of recent events, several organizations have taken to virtual meetings and webinars to speak up about anti-black racism. Among these organizations is the Peel District School Board’s Parent Involvement Committee (PIC).

The PIC will be hosting a virtual town hall on Thursday June 18, 2020 from 7:30 to 9:00pm to hear from parents of Black students in the Peel District School Board (PDSB). The town hall will be hosted through Microsoft Teams. All concerned parents and/or guardians of Black students in Peel are encouraged to attend. During the virtual town hall, parents will be debriefed on the findings of the report by the Ontario Ministry of Education regarding anti-black racism in the PDSB. Parents will also be able to discuss the independent findings of Arleen Huggins, who conducted a private investigation of the school board. The PIC is looking to create a forum where parents can discuss how anti-black racism should be addressed at the PDSB.

Along with members of the PIC, Trustee Kathy McDonald and Dr. Beverly Jean Daniel will be attending. Dr Daniel is an equity expert who focuses on black student engagement and diversity training in schools.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to share the meeting link and information with others to maximize engagement during the town hall.
