Why Wear Pink on Wednesday?

day_of-PinkWednesday (April 13, 2016) is International Day of Pink, a day to stand against Bullying, Homophobia and Transphobia by wearing Pink as a sign of unity. This day is a way to show support and respect to those in our society that are targeted because of their sexuality, the way they look, or for simply being different. Hopefully, everyday becomes a day to show respect and support for all of our fellow human beings.

As a person of short stature, I spent most of my youth being bullied. I know first-hand what it is like to be on the receiving end of a bully. It is devastating. I was also very lucky to have a loving uncle that devoted his life helping those without a voice that could not work. He helped others get the quality of life they deserved. He was the life of every party and loved cooking for others. My uncle sadly passed away feeling he had to hide his sexuality from most friends, family and associates because of the way others would treat him.

No person should ever have to feel ashamed of who they are or for not fitting into life’s cookie cutter. On Wednesday April 13th please join me in standing proud with our friends and family, no matter their age, mental health, race, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

We all deserve to be respected for who we are.
