About Army Cadets
The Cadets program is one of Canada’s oldest youth programs. The origins of the program can be traced back to 1862. By 1879, Army Cadets was formed, followed by the introduction of Sea Cadets in 1895, and Air Cadets in 1941. In 1975, girls were first allowed to join Cadets. Today, they represent 34 percent of all cadets in Canada. The cadet training programs are offered to young men and women 12 to 18 years of age.

Nationally, there are 1,100 cadet corps and squadrons involving 58,000 youth. Cadets are supervised by members of the Canadian Forces, most of whom are among the 7,500 members of the Canadian Forces Reserve Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC). Its members are specially trained part-time members of the Canadian Forces who dedicate their spare time to the development of Canada’s youth.
Provincially, there are 110 Cadet Corps across Ontario and 6,000 Army Cadets in Ontario. Locally, the 557 Lorne Scots Army Cadet Corps is in its 46th year with over 100 active cadet members, most of which are from our own community right here in Brampton.
Experiences You Can’t Get Anywhere Else
The goal of this program is to instill in young Canadians the values of leadership, physical fitness, confidence and civic duty. Army cadets are encouraged to develop self-confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of teamwork in order to become active and responsible community members. The youth program provides experience and training in camping, adventure training, citizenship, leadership, marksmanship, drill, band/music, where students can earn volunteer hours, high school credits, and so much more. There is absolutely no experience needed to start learning new things and making new friends.

The Army Cadet Program Is Free
There are no enrolment or registration fees, or costs for uniforms or training. Cadets selected for cadet camps attend at no cost.
