THE 2018 World University rankings were released with Canadian universities earning 26 of the top 1,000 spots. The top 5 Canadian universities are:

1. University of Toronto
2. University of British Columbia
3. McGill University
4. McMaster University
5. University of Montreal

The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, both in the UK were ranked first and second worldwide.  The California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and Stanford University were tied for first in the United States.  Ryerson University in Toronto, which is planning an expansion into Brampton, did not make the top 1,000 list. However, Ryerson is ranked 18th in Canada in terms of graduate employability.

Brampton City Council will be discussing the merits of a $150M investment over 10 years at today’s City of Council meeting. In a report prepared for the meeting, $50M is being recommended towards a University and College partnership and another $100M for infrastructure including shared space for community, business and students. This municipal funding would be in addition to the $180M announced by the province to be divided between new university projects in both Milton and Brampton. The federal government has not yet announced any funding, however, Minister Navdeep Bains in a recent press briefing indicated openness for discussions.
