The Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Catherine McKenna, joined Brampton’s MPs and MPPs to announce major upgrades and investments into Brampton Transit. This includes the addition of 32 new conventional buses and the refurbishing of 300 hybrid and conventional buses. Additionally, a new transit hub will be built to increase the number of bus bays and double the number of trips that can be made.
The $113 million investment includes $45.3 million from the federal government, $37.8 million from the provincial government and $30.2 from the City of Brampton.
Brampton has one of the fastest growing transit systems in Canada. “We must prioritize energy efficient solutions for public transportation while supporting the thousands of riders that move across Brampton each day” stated Mayor Patrick Brown.
“As our economy continues to recover, it is even more important that Bramptonians have access to transit that links them to new opportunities and a brighter tomorrow,” said Minister McKenna. Last year, Minister McKenna also announced funding for the world’s first compatible electric bus network for Brampton.
More than $113 million will be invested in sustainable public transportation in Brampton. $22.78 million will be for replacement buses, $55 million will be invested into bus refurbishments, $5 million will be invested into on-board cameras and digital video recorders, and $30 million will be for the new transit hub. Investing in sustainable infrastructure builds a cleaner, healthier and more efficient city as pictured in the Brampton 2040 vision.
